David Hayes breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday night after Ka Ying Rising drew barrier seven for Saturday’s $20 million The Everest at Randwick.

The Hall of Fame trainer said he was “happy” with the gate, which places the Hong Kong star between Mazu (two) and Overpass (nine) — both early speed influences.

“I just thought anywhere not the complete outside, of course, because it’s always more difficult out there,” Hayes said following the drone light show draw over Sydney Harbour.

“I think Zac (Purton) can choose whether he goes right forward or follows what could be the frantic pace. Some of his best wins have been sitting off the pace, but if they don’t go fast, he’ll lead.”

After the draw, bookmakers trimmed Ka Ying Rising’s odds to $1.60, solidifying his position as favourite.

Hayes said the sprinter had improved significantly since last week’s Randwick trial, adding, “His weight’s dropped beautifully and I think we’ve got him where we want him.”
