Trainer Michael Freedman almost spelled Apocalyptic after her Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) victory, but a strong recovery convinced him to chase another major in Saturday’s Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.
Freedman gave the star filly a hit-out at Caulfield on Tuesday with Mark Zahra aboard and was impressed with how she handled the track.
“I did give some thought to stopping and giving her a break, but she pulled up so well after the Flight that we thought as long as she travelled down well and settled in well that it was worth a shy at the stumps,” Freedman said.
He said the gallop was crucial to familiarise her with Caulfield’s tight turns, which can test Sydney horses. “She seemed to track on the right leg most of the way today… I loved the way she worked through the line and Mark seemed really happy.”
Stablemate Just A Journey will instead contest the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) after a narrow defeat in the Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m).
