Waller-trained colt charges to Valley win

Trainer Chris Waller says it is unlikely Charge will be added to his stable’s Coolmore Stud Stakes team after the colt scored a fighting win in a Group Three sprint at Moonee Valley.

Waller is expected to have strong representation in next Saturday’s $1 million Group One Coolmore (1200m) at Flemington for three-year-olds including Golden Rose runner-up Zousain.

“It has probably come around a bit quick, a race like the Coolmore, but he’s been a work in progress and just gradually learning to settle and do things right,” Waller said.

“He’s a very talented horse so he’ll be headed for better things.”

With Winx’s jockey Hugh Bowman aboard, Charge surged forward from the outside barrier to lead Saturday’s 1300 Australia Stakes (1200m) for three-year-olds and was never headed despite a strong challenge from Sunset Watch.

Charge ($7.50) fended off Sunset Watch ($5) by a long head with a length to Ringerdingding ($13) third.

“He looked in trouble with 200 metres to go but he held them safely on the line,” Waller said.

Bowman said it was no surprise to see Charge fight and win and believes the colt has the potential to reach greater heights if he can stretch out a little bit further in distance.

“I don’t think he’s a real six furlong (1200m) horse but if he’s going to get further he’s got to harness his energy,” Bowman said.

“He’s a natural runner, but he’s got to harness that energy if he’s going to really step up to the grade we think he can.”
