Trainer Grahame Begg is aiming to replicate a rapid ascent from maiden victory to Stakes race success for one of his promising fillies, mirroring his feat from the previous week.
Last Saturday, Aroused transitioned from a debut maiden win at Ballarat to a narrow second in the Listed Crockett Stakes at Flemington.
This Saturday, Begg’s next three-year-old contender, Blue Dream, will step up to Stakes company in the Group 3 The Vanity over 1400 metres.
Blue Dream commenced her racing career impressively, securing a win at Kyneton on October 8, coming from behind under the guidance of jockey Jordan Childs.
Begg often selects Kyneton for his less experienced horses, as the track provides an opportunity for them to recover from a poor start.
“She jumped in the air when he let them go,” Begg recounted. “The plan wasn’t to be back last, so he had to take his medicine because she drew wide. She stood the leaders up a very big start and put up a bit of a phenomenal effort to get up in the last stride. Kyneton, it’s a good surface and that 1200-metres start, there is a good run down the back straight, so I like going there, especially for a young horse having their first start.”
Begg indicated that the daughter of Justify has trained well since her debut, but this race is likely to be her final outing before a spell.
He anticipates that Blue Dream will benefit from increased distance as she matures and looks forward to her autumn campaign.
Given her ownership by Yulong, Begg stressed that any Black Type earned now would significantly enhance her future breeding value.
“It’s a big step going from a Kyneton maiden to running in a Stakes race, but we feel she’s a filly with some promise,” Begg stated. “The further she steps out in distance, because she’s by Justify, that will suit her. She’s a plain looking girl, a homebred of Yulong’s, but she’s got some talent there and if she can get some Black Type, all the better.”
