Another Wil’s emotional CF Orr Stakes victory

Jamie Kah’s 15 Group 1 wins pale in comparison to her first victory as Jamie Melham, having recently married fellow jockey Ben Melham, after riding Ciaron Maher-trained Another Wil to victory in the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Another Wil, bred by Colin and Janice McKenna, raced in their Blue and Lime Hoops, but Colin tragically passed away last year from a brain tumour and missed witnessing the colt’s first Group 1 win.

An emotional Melham spoke about the significance of the victory, especially for Colin, saying, “There’s a God in racing…this horse has deserved it for so many starts, but to do it for Col after his birthday was on Tuesday is just amazing.”

Another Wil, the $3.30 second favourite, held off $2.60 favourite Mr Brightside to win by a short neck, with Steparty ($14) finishing third.

Trainer Ciaron Maher, who resisted rushing Another Wil into top-level races, reflected on Colin McKenna’s love for the horse and the special nature of the win.

“Colin always loved this horse in particular,” Maher said.

Looking ahead, Maher is hopeful Another Wil will have a career as successful as Mr Brightside’s.

The Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and All-Star Mile (1600m) are possible targets, with Maher saying, “The All-Star Mile seems like a natural progression for him.”
