Mick Price has set his sights on the Randwick Guineas for Public Attention after the colt’s impressive victory in the Eskimo Prince Stakes.
The son of Written Tycoon, priced at $5, held off Linebacker ($4.80) by 1¼ lengths, with race favourite Gatsby’s ($4.20) finishing third.
After a fifth-place finish in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), this first-up Group 3 win over 1200 metres has Price and Michael Kent Jnr excited about their Sydney stable’s potential.
“I’ve said to the Coolmore boys that he’s a better physical horse this time in,” Price said.
“We had some shin soreness last prep, but he’s a better horse now, and you saw the benefit of that.”
Price is confident the colt’s bloodline, from a strong New Zealand family, will suit a 1600-metre trip.
“He’s got 1600 written all over him,” Price said.
Jockey Chad Schofield praised Public Attention’s performance, saying he gave a great feel as he lengthened down the straight.
Linebacker, also first-up, will benefit from the run, according to Kerrin McEvoy, who noted 1400 metres would suit the horse better.
Public Attention is likely to race next in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) before aiming for the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 8, where he is an $8 chance.
