Asfoora makes French racing history after dramatic passport dash

Asfoora etched her name into the record books again, becoming the first Australian-trained horse to win in France after taking out the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp on Sunday.

The Henry Dwyer-trained mare’s triumph came after a near disaster when she almost missed the race due to a missing passport.

“The dumb Australians forgot to pack the passport, unfortunately, so we had a bit of an issue,” Dwyer said.

An Uber driver, promised £200, made a frantic dash from Chantilly to deliver the document with just 90 seconds to spare.

Once cleared, Asfoora produced her trademark finish under Oisin Murphy to overhaul Jawwal and win by half a length.

It was her second Group 1 victory this season, following the Nunthorpe Stakes (1005m) at York in August.

Dwyer said the win vindicated their decision to continue racing abroad, adding that while conditions weren’t ideal in Ireland, “she was able to cope with it today.”
