Baraqiel on track for return as Manikato Stakes campaign looms

Trainers Leon and Troy Corstens, along with Will Larkin, are weighing up whether to kick off Baraqiel’s spring in Saturday’s Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

The five-year-old, one of 12 entries for the race, is coming off another injury setback but impressed with a recent jump-out win at Flemington.

Troy Corstens said he would’ve preferred the race to be over 1100m, given Baraqiel is resuming from a long layoff.

The gelding had previously overcome a hind suspensory issue and suffered a similar front-leg injury following a placing in The Meteorite at Cranbourne.

“He did have a really good puff afterwards and he’ll be going into the race off a long break,” Corstens said.

“We’re working backwards from the Manikato Stakes, which is his main goal.”

Corstens said they’ll decide after Tuesday’s final acceptances whether to run Saturday, with Ben Allen booked to ride if he starts.
