Barrier helps Snitz win at Doomben

Trainer Matt Dunn’s prediction his gelding Snitz would win a classy race the day he drew a good barrier was proved right on Saturday.

Snitz ($4.80) had won only one previous race but had no luck in his other four runs, which produced two seconds, a third and a fourth.

Dunn, who was in Sydney on Saturday, declared earlier in the week Snitz only needed to draw well to be hard to beat a top quality field in the Three-Years-Old Handicap (1350m) at Doomben.

Jockey Robbie Fradd gave Snitz a perfect run from barrier four and the gelding went on to beat Cellargirl ($4.60) by 1-1/4 lengths with the same margin to the unlucky I Am Impinge ($3.30) in third.

Stable foreman Toby McIntosh said Dunn had no firm plans for Snitz but a Sydney trip in the spring could be on the cards.

Trainer Kelly Schweida was very pleased with Cellargirl who came from second last.

“She just won’t go early but she is finishing off her races in style,” he said.

I Am Impinge was caught three and four deep the whole way from his outside barrier.

“It was a good effort considering but you can’t make a 600m run and beat this class of horse,” trainer Toby Edmonds said.

Meanwhile, apprentice Stephanie Lacy continued her good recent run when Mishani El Lobo ($6.50) won the Class 6 Plate (1100m).

Mishani El Lobo was a short-priced pre-post favourite but was scratched because of a minor foot problem.

“This race was perfect for him and he was able to bring his best three year old form here today,” said trainer Chris Anderson.

Jockey Ron Stewart scored a winning double on Ingeegoodbe ($5) and Magnajoy ($12) with them both scoring by a nose.

Stewart had ridden Ingeegoodbee three times for three wins and trainer Robert Heathcote gave him credit for the gelding’s revival.

“Ronnie knows exactly how to ride him,” Heathcote said.

“Let him get into his stride and rhythm, he will do the rest.”

Trainer Michael Costa continued his good run with Magnajoy who finished hard to win.

“We had her in at the Gold Coast as well but decided to chase the better prize money in town,” Costa said.
