Ceolwulf has strengthened his claim as Australia’s premier miler after a thrilling victory in the Group 1 Champions Mile at Flemington.
In his first Victorian start, the Joe Pride-trained gelding showed immense fight under Chad Schofield to reel in Pericles and win the $3 million feature.
It followed his successful defence of the $5 million King Charles III Stakes at Randwick, taking his career prizemoney to nearly $11 million.
“He’s an amazing horse, I’m just so proud of him,” Pride said. “I’ve thought for a long time he’s the best horse I’ve trained and with his last two wins, he’s certainly cemented his spot there.”
Ceolwulf ($5) fought back after being headed by Pericles ($19) at the 250m, prevailing by a short half-head, with Stefi Magnetica ($11) third.
Schofield said the Tavistock gelding showed true grit. “When Pericles got past him, he went again. He’s top class.”
Pride confirmed a return to Flemington next spring, with the Cox Plate firmly on the radar.
