Champion stallion Snitzel dies aged 22, marking end of an era

Champion sire Snitzel has died aged 22, with Arrowfield Stud confirming the star stallion was euthanised on Wednesday morning due to age-related health decline.

The son of Redoute’s Choice had been a cornerstone of the Hunter Valley stud and a four-time Australian Champion Stallion winner from 2017 to 2020.

“Despite comprehensive veterinary support and the daily dedication of Arrowfield’s experienced stallion team, his condition deteriorated rapidly,” the stud said.

“With no treatment options remaining, the decision was made to allow him a peaceful and dignified farewell.”

Snitzel sired 160 Stakes winners who claimed 309 Group and Listed races, including 23 at Group 1 level.

His progeny earned over $257 million in prize money across 3673 race wins.

Notable offspring include Golden Slipper winners Estijaab, Shinzo and Marhoona, dual Everest hero Redzel, and Cox Plate champion Shamus Award — himself a Group 1-producing sire.

“Snitzel was more than a commercial success; he was a reliable and stoic presence,” Arrowfield said, acknowledging his profound legacy.
