Chris Waller backs Buckaroo amid small-field debate in The Might And Power

Chris Waller will again face a small field when Buckaroo lines up in the $1 million Group 1 The Might And Power at Caulfield on Saturday.

The champion trainer, who won the 2016 edition with Winx in a three-horse race, admits he’s not a fan of small fields despite the easier path to victory.

“Less to beat,” Waller said. “(But) I don’t like no pace in any race – I’m a big fan of pacemakers, if they brought them in.”

Buckaroo will take on Treasurethe Moment, Light Infantry Man, Globe and Hezashocka. Light Infantry Man is also entered for the $2 million Hill Stakes (1900m) in Sydney.

The gelding finished third in both the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Underwood Stakes (1800m), and Waller says he’s ready to peak third-up.

A call on whether Buckaroo heads to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate will come after Saturday’s run.
