Chris Waller will saddle up to five runners in his quest for a fourth victory in the Gosford Gold Cup on Saturday, though all are set to start at double-figure odds.
The quintet includes First Light ($101), Etna Rosso ($26), Scarlet Oak ($15), Medatsu ($13), and Mr Waterville ($41). Medatsu, his top pick, will back up from a fourth-place finish in last Friday’s Wagga Cup (2000m).
Waller hopes a low draw in barrier two at Gosford will help Medatsu take up a handier position, having been forced to race from the back in his previous start.
“He ticks a few boxes and he’s a decent horse,” Waller said.
Medatsu has been consistent, finishing fifth in the Albury Cup (2000m) before his Wagga effort, with top jockey Kerrin McEvoy retaining the ride.
Mr Waterville, originally targeted at the Sydney Cup (3200m), has been redirected after missing out on a start as an emergency. Freshened since a midfield finish in the Chairman’s Handicap (2600m), Waller hopes Gosford will act as a stepping stone toward the Brisbane Cup next month.
“He’s well and he’s a rough place chance on Saturday,” Waller said.
Defending champion Hezashocker ($5) heads the field for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr yard, with 14 runners set to contest the race, which also offers Big Dance eligibility.
