With 97 Group One wins across seven countries, it’s surprising that renowned international jockey Christophe Lemaire has only now made his way to Sydney.
Though Lemaire has enjoyed success in Australia, including winning the 2011 Melbourne Cup on Dunaden, Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick will mark his first appearance in Sydney.
Lemaire has travelled to partner Japanese horse Rousham Park in the $5 million race, forgoing a significant overseas event.
“I’ve never had the opportunity before,” he said. “Sydney is a major city for horse racing in Australia, and it’s something important to experience in a jockey’s career.”
Rousham Park, trained by Hiroyasu Tanaka, has raced 16 times, with Lemaire riding him to four of his six wins. The pair most recently finished second behind Rebel’s Romance in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Lemaire is hopeful the horse’s international experience will aid them in facing strong competition, including Via Sistina and Dubai Honour.
“I have a very good souvenir from Australia winning the Melbourne Cup in 2011,” Lemaire added. “Hopefully, this weekend it will be another good result for Rousham Park.”
