Grahame Begg aims for Stakes win with Zloties before stud career

Trainer Grahame Begg is working to secure a Stakes race victory for Zloties before she heads to stud.

While the Bendigo Gold Bracelet (1400m) on Saturday isn’t a Black Type race, it is an important step towards the mare’s future prospects at Stakes level.

At nearly six years old and with only seven starts to her name, Zloties has had an injury-plagued career. Begg had high hopes after her debut in February 2022, but stress fractures sidelined her for two-and-a-half years.

Since returning, Zloties has impressed, winning at Geelong and Sandown, and most recently claimed a benchmark 70 victory on March 19.

Saturday’s race will see Zloties rise in grade to face mares under set weights and penalties conditions.

“We always liked her, which is why we ran her as a two-year-old,” Begg said. “She’s come back well, but we need to improve her rating to target better races.”

Begg is considering the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on April 26, as well as options like the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) and Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone.

“She’s a well-bred mare, and our goal is to get her some Black Type before she heads to stud,” Begg added.
