Australia’s leading trainer, Ciaron Maher, will aim for a breakthrough win in the prestigious Blue Diamond Stakes on Saturday, fielding three fillies for the Group 1 race at Caulfield.

Maher is yet to win the 1200m event and will be represented by Icarian Dream, Wiltshire Square, and Cherish Me.

Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull, based at Cranbourne, believes all three fillies are strong contenders for the race.

He highlighted Cherish Me, who comes off a debut win at Geelong in January, as the highest-rated two-year-old from the stable this season.

Cherish Me will jump from barrier six and be ridden by Jamie Melham, aiming for a second consecutive Blue Diamond victory after winning last year on Hayasugi.

“She’s a beautiful filly and will improve with age,” Turnbull said. “She’s above average and can handle these sprint trips.”

Icarian Dream, who hasn’t raced since finishing 12th in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January, enters the race as the most experienced of the 16 contenders.

Turnbull believes Icarian Dream’s wide draw and a wet track hindered her previous performance, but she has drawn barrier seven for this race, with Thomas Stockdale aboard.

Wiltshire Square, still a maiden, has placed in both the Preview and Prelude, finishing third on each occasion.

“She’s a little terrier, and although she’s small, she’s a trier,” Turnbull said. “She’s shown plenty of determination and has the ability to finish strong.”

The trio will be looking to give Maher his first win in the prestigious race.
