Trainer Dan Morton wasn’t thrilled with Super Smink’s seventh-place finish in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield two weeks ago.

Hoping for a strong showing from his top mare, Morton was left to reflect on the result, which saw her finish behind Another Wil and Mr Brightside.

However, after reviewing the race, Morton feels the seven-length defeat wasn’t as bad as it seemed, especially since Super Smink raced on the worst part of the track.

The four-year-old mare stayed close to the fence, failing to attack the line as Morton had expected, but he still believes in her potential.

Super Smink returns to Caulfield this Saturday for the second leg of her Group 1 campaign in the Futurity Stakes (1400m), and Morton is optimistic about her chances.

“On the day, it was a bit of a head scratcher because I’m not used to her not attacking the line,” Morton told Racing WA.

“After reviewing it and considering the track, the consensus was the inside wasn’t ideal. But she still looked likely to finish third or fourth.”

“She’s recovered well and will improve from the run.”

Morton remains confident in Super Smink’s ability, calling her a “four-year-old mare on the rise.”

The $1.2 million prize-winner was bought for just $45,000 at Perth’s Magic Millions yearling sale three years ago.

Super Smink made history as a two-year-old, winning the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (1200m), Karrakatta Plate (1200m), and WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Other career highlights include wins in the Belgravia Stakes (1200m) and the Asian Beau Stakes (1400m).

She is currently priced at $31 with wagering companies in the all-in Futurity Stakes market.

Super Smink will be ridden by Billy Egan, who takes over from John Allen.

Mr Brightside is the $1.70 favorite with online betting sites.

Morton is hopeful that Super Smink can secure a spot in the All-Star Mile after this Saturday’s race.
