Cigar Flick storms home to end winless run, heads for stud after season finale

Cigar Flick broke a 13-month drought with a powerful finish at Randwick, saluting in the final city meeting of Sydney’s racing season.

Winless since June last year, the Chris Waller-trained mare capitalised on a hot tempo to claim Saturday’s ATC Thank You Trainers Handicap (1100m) with a strong surge down the outside.

“She needs everything to flow. She needs to come into the race at the right time, the right track conditions and today it was in her favour,” Waller said.

“She is a lovely horse… she won’t have too much more racing. Her mum is a sister to Fangirl so she is well bred and she will go to stud this year.”

Patiently ridden by Tommy Berry, Cigar Flick ($13) stormed home to beat World Alliance ($11) by 1-1/4 lengths, with Bundeena ($8) third.

Waller believes she can pick up another win before retirement.

Meanwhile, James Cummings’ final Sydney runner for Godolphin, Tarpaulin ($3.60 fav), disappointed after racing erratically.

Cummings did claim a double at Kembla Grange with Cinsault and Tong Ho, while Kin finished runner-up in the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield.
