Victorian mare Coeur Volante will aim for an emotional win in the Coolmore Classic, just weeks after the passing of her beloved trainer, Michael Moroney.
The Melbourne Cup-winning trainer died last month following a recent return to racing after battling illness. His training partner, Glen Thompson, will saddle up Coeur Volante for Saturday’s Group 1 Rosehill feature and says the mare has impressed since her dominant four-length win in last month’s Mannerism Stakes (1400m).
“She has done very well. She is really handling her racing this time, which is good to see,” said Thompson.
“The trip to Queensland really toughened her up, and I hope she settles in well for a strong performance.”
Thompson admits the mare struggled with travel during last year’s Brisbane winter carnival, but he remains optimistic.
“She’s definitely tougher now, but the travel is always a concern,” he added.
Kerrin McEvoy, who won his first Melbourne Cup aboard Moroney’s Brew, will partner Coeur Volante in the Coolmore Classic (1500m). The mare, who has drawn the inside gate, is a $9.50 chance with betting sites for the feature.
