Jockey Michael Dee is set for a rare Perth appearance as he hunts another Group 1 victory aboard Apulia in Saturday’s Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot.
It will be his first ride at the track since 2018, and he reunites with the Lindsay Park-trained entire, having partnered him in three of his four career wins.
Dee guided Apulia to his maiden victory at Cranbourne in August 2023 and is unbeaten on him this preparation, winning first-up at Moonee Valley before adding the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week.
Last year’s Northerly winner Light Infantry Man also claimed the Chester Manifold, though he missed the placings in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in between.
While pleased with Apulia’s progress, Dee admits barrier 14 poses a challenge.
“He’s come back well and is going well, but he’s drawn a bit average,” Dee said.
“He naturally gets back, but it’s going to be a bit tricky.
“Last start we were able to have a nice run from barrier one… so hopefully they roll along and the 1800 metres is going to suit him.
“In his runs, he relaxes beautifully… and he’s got a good turn of foot when asked.”
Dee believes Apulia has returned as well as his strong three-year-old season, if not better.
Since arriving in Perth, Apulia finished second in a Belmont trial on November 24.
“He looked to trial there really well,” Dee said.
“I haven’t spoken to the boys… so fingers crossed he’s ready to run well on Saturday.”
