Annabel Archibald is taking inspiration from an unlikely source as she prepares Depth Of Character for Saturday’s Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot.
The four-year-old drew the outside barrier, prompting Archibald to revisit Marwong’s famous 1988 victory from gate 16.
“There was a horse called Marwong, who Simon Marshall won on when he was seventeen years old,” Archibald said.
“It won from (barrier) sixteen in 1988, so I got it up on YouTube. I think there have been three winners from that gate. It’s due again.”
Depth Of Character heads west in similar form to Port Lockroy, who won the race for Archibald last year after a strong Golden Eagle (1500m) run.
He finished fourth behind Autumn Glow after settling in the second half of the field, and was luckless in the Silver Eagle (1300m) prior.
Reece Jones takes the ride fresh off his Five Diamonds win aboard Vivy Air.
“Reece is riding in really good form at the moment and it’s nice to give him a Group One opportunity,” Archibald said.
“Depth Of Character is better credentialled… he is going well. He is just going to need luck.”
Local powerhouse Grant and Alana Williams saddle three runners in a field traditionally dominated by WA stables.
