Desert Lightning resumes in PB Lawrence Stakes

Desert Lightning will launch his spring campaign in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, with a potential Caulfield Cup tilt on the horizon.

Trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, the six-year-old hasn’t raced since running fourth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in June, just behind race favourite Private Eye.

After a Queensland freshen-up, Desert Lightning returned to Pakenham last month and has since trialled at Caulfield.

“We may give him his chance to stretch out in trip this time around… he has won out to 2100 metres as a younger horse,” Moody said.

The former New Zealand galloper holds nominations for both the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Cox Plate (2040m).

Drawn barrier one with Ben Melham aboard, Moody says the gelding is in good order for what shapes as a competitive first-up assignment.
