Trainer Clayton Douglas will take a bold step with promising colt Top Reward, sending him straight to Group 2 company in Saturday’s $400,000 Sandown Guineas at Caulfield.
The son of Shamus Award was a dominant winner of a 1500m Mornington maiden 23 days ago, and Douglas said the colt’s talent warranted the leap in class.
“I thought he’d win first up and he did,” Douglas said. “We paid a bit of money for him… it’s at the end of the carnival, it’s definitely worth having a crack at.”
Top Reward, a $300,000 Magic Millions purchase, is rated a $15 chance behind Group 3 The Vanity winner Sheza Alibi ($2.20).
Douglas gave the colt a look around Caulfield on Tuesday and was pleased with his work.
“I just brought him out here today for a day out… he’s a really lovely laid-back colt,” he said. “It is a big jump in grade, but I think he’ll run really well.”
Likely rivals include Burma Star, Tagline, Call Da Vinci and Centu Cavaddi.
