Bjorn Baker will chase another big spring result when he saddles Iowna Merc and Robusto in Saturday’s Group 2 The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle.
Last year’s edition produced future Group 1 winner Briasa, and Baker believes his pair can give a strong showing despite facing a tough field.
Iowna Merc has enjoyed a productive 2025 with three wins, including a Group 2, and placings in the Expressway and Sydney Stakes (1200m). However, he failed to fire in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m).
“Iowna Merc never fired on the track last time but he’s in good order,” Baker said. “He just didn’t go at all, he didn’t fire, so I think we just press on.”
Robusto, a $160,000 Darby Racing buy and winner of the Group 2 The Ingham (1600m), resumes first-up targeting that race again.
“Robusto’s definitely well… although I think he probably takes a run or two to get to his best,” Baker said.
Both carry 59kg and are early market chances at $15 and $13.
