Emerging colt Gallo Nero will face a key challenge at Eagle Farm on Saturday, stepping up to 1400m for the first time in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Trainer Michael Hawkes says the race will shape the youngster’s future, with a possible shot at the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on the line.
“His next run will determine whether he goes to the J J or whether he goes to the paddock and gets ready for the latter part of the spring,” Hawkes said.
The colt has impressed in shorter sprints, including a third-place finish in the Magic Millions Classic (1200m), and more recently a narrow defeat to Cool Archie in the Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m).
“He won the race as far as we’re concerned but unfortunately just doesn’t get the kudos,” Hawkes said.
Despite racing wide and dealing with a wet track, Gallo Nero has bounced back well, with Tyler Schiller to ride from barrier eight.
