Trainer Andrew Gluyas has opted against changing the gear of in-form galloper Guru Warrior, despite the gelding’s erratic run last start.
The emerging middle-distance prospect will start a short-priced favourite in Saturday’s Skybeau Series heat over 2028m, chasing his third straight win.
Guru Warrior appeared to have his last race well in hand before veering sharply under pressure from jockey Jason Holder, forcing a correction in the closing stages.
“We did consider gear but we decided against it and gave him the benefit of the doubt,” Gluyas said. “He does seem to travel so well in his races and we didn’t want to upset that component of his racing.”
Gluyas hopes a stronger tempo will help the son of Saxon Warrior stay focused.
Meanwhile, he confirmed Gawler Cup winner Air Assault will contest Tuesday’s Listed John Letts Cup, with Watchme Win and Arugamama targeting Flemington races during Melbourne Cup week.
