Trainer Rory Hunter is keeping expectations modest ahead of Autumn Mystery’s bid for Group 1 success in the Victoria Derby at Flemington on Saturday.
“I’d be happy to go to the pub for a parma and a pot of beer, that would do me,” Hunter said. “You do have to dream, and he’ll represent the stable really well on Saturday.”
The three-year-old, a $15,000 yearling buy, has come a long way since contesting the Blue Diamond Stakes as a two-year-old and now steps up to 2500m chasing a third straight win.
After breakthrough victories at Flemington and in the Caulfield Classic (2000m), Hunter says the gelding is thriving.
“He’s bounced out of his last run really well,” he said.
Blake Shinn retains the ride from barrier 15. “A jockey of Blake’s experience, you don’t have to give them any instructions,” Hunter said. “He’s been fantastic for the owners. He owes them nothing.”
