Hayes brothers eye breakthrough Coolmore win with Tycoon Star

The Lindsay Park trio of Ben, Will and JD Hayes are chasing a family milestone with Tycoon Star in Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

While their father David Hayes famously trained six Derby Day winners in 1989, the stable has never captured the Coolmore since it became a Group 1 in 2006.

Ben Hayes said the race had been Tycoon Star’s long-term goal since the colt kicked off his spring campaign in August.

“It has been the race that we’ve wanted to end up at,” Hayes said. “He’s a horse that could surprise. He’s good enough, we just need to make sure he does things right through the race and finishes off strong.”

Tycoon Star, who won the Maribyrnong Plate last spring and placed in the Blue Diamond Stakes, comes into the Coolmore off a fifth behind familiar rivals Mcgaw, My Gladiola and Tentyris.

With a freshen-up, new visors and proven straight-track form, Hayes believes the colt could deliver Lindsay Park a long-awaited Coolmore triumph.
