Sutton backs ‘forgotten horse’ Feroce to surprise in $10m Golden Eagle

Trainer Dominic Sutton is hoping to cap a breakout year with a win in Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick.

Less than two years into his training career, Sutton already boasts a Group 1 triumph with Feroce in the Australian Guineas.

The gelding has been aimed at the Golden Eagle since finishing sixth in the Australian Cup earlier this year.

After a luckless run in the Toorak Handicap, Sutton believes Feroce is back to his best following a strong Flemington jump-out.

“It was obviously disappointing… but we probably learned a bit about him in that he needs a bit of cover in these high-pressure Group 1 races,” Sutton said.

At $61, Sutton says Feroce is “the forgotten horse” among a field featuring Autumn Glow, Linebacker and Evaporate.

With Billy Egan suspended, Josh Parr takes the ride.

“He’s a nice patient rider and he should be the right fit,” Sutton said.
