Trainer Matthew Smith will take a traditional route toward the Group 1 The Everest (1200m) with rising star sprinter Headwall.
The six-year-old impressed during the autumn, placing in both the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), before a close second in The Quokka (1200m).
While he didn’t register a win, Smith says Headwall’s form proves he’s worthy of an Everest slot.
“He’s fantastic,” Smith told RSN Radio.
“He had a nice little break and he looks outstanding… He’s just getting better and better every season.”
The Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) on September 6 has been pencilled in for his return.
“Randwick, 1000 metres is a perfect kick off point,” Smith said.
Described as quirky but maturing, Smith believes this campaign could be Headwall’s best yet.
“This preparation, we could see a better sprinter than last prep.”
