Italian stayer Presage Nocturne eyes Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double

Italian trainers Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti are preparing their star stayer Presage Nocturne for a bold assault on both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup this spring.

The grey son of Wootton Bassett has impressed in France, taking out the Group 3 Prix de Barbeville before placing third in the Group 1 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier.

He’s expected to have one more French run in August—either the Prix Kergorlay or the Grand Prix de Deauville—before heading to Melbourne.

“Presage Nocturne will probably run in the Caulfield Cup, but before that he’ll run in either the Prix Kergorlay or Grand Prix de Deauville,” Alessandro Botti said.

With proven international form, including a strong fourth in the Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap in Saudi Arabia, Botti is confident his galloper can handle the travel.

“He’ll spend two weeks in quarantine before boarding the plane to Australia. I’ll fly down for the Cup, which will be magic for the owners and I to attend,” he said.

Their cousin Marco Botti saddled Jakkalberry to third in the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

“I hope we can add the name of another French-trained horse to the Melbourne Cup honour roll.”
