Slot holder Jack Lee-Steere may look back on his successful bid for West Star in the $5 million Kia-Quokka (1200m) as a pivotal moment in his racing journey.
Initially focused on Sydney racing and the outcome of the T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), Lee-Steere’s plans shifted when negotiations for a couple of contenders fell through. However, after watching West Star’s impressive return at Ascot, Lee-Steere quickly regained his enthusiasm.
The Simon Miller-trained three-year-old, by Playing God, has shown immense potential, winning the Belgravia Stakes (1200m) last year and remaining unbeaten in six starts. Lee-Steere is hopeful West Star can make an impact in the Quokka.
“I wasn’t really following him until I saw his race at Ascot,” Lee-Steere said. “I’m very happy and confident. He’s a bit of an unknown with some x-factor.”
This will be Lee-Steere’s third attempt at winning the Quokka after having Bustler and Oscar’s Fortune compete in the first two editions. Miller, who has come close with Amelia’s Jewel, is also hoping for a breakthrough victory in the rich race.
The Kia-Quokka, Perth’s richest race, sees Overpass as the $2.50 favourite, while West Star is priced at $11. Lee-Steere is a big fan of the Quokka, praising its development as a key part of Perth’s autumn carnival.
“The race day is thrilling. It’s exactly what I wanted the Quokka to do,” Lee-Steere said. “Everyone has got around it so quickly, it’s awesome.”
