Alalcance aims for Sydney Cup glory after strong autumn campaign

Tulloch Lodge mare Alalcance has been one of the standout performers this autumn, but a Sydney Cup win remains the ultimate goal.

Co-trainer Adrian Bott hopes she can seal the deal in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick, stepping up to two miles for the first time.

The former European has impressed with a string of stakes wins, including a dominant victory in the Chairman’s Quality (2600m) last weekend, where she easily accounted for many of her Sydney Cup rivals.

Bott is confident she will handle the longer distance. “She’s got the pedigree to suggest she will stay, and she was very strong through the line on Saturday,” Bott said. “Everything she’s shown so far gives us a positive indication that she will stay.”

Alalcance is the favourite for the Sydney Cup at $2.40, with Zardozi ($8) and Birdman ($8.50) the next closest in the market. Despite drawing barrier 15, Bott is not concerned, believing it will suit her on-pace style.

“She is versatile and the draw gives us the best options to ride her,” Bott said.
