Kehoe’s Shaggy shines in Pierro Plate, Golden Slipper dreams loom

Wyong trainer Allan Kehoe was so elated with Shaggy’s win in the Listed Pierro Plate at Randwick that he nearly stripped off to celebrate.

“I could have done a nude run, I was that excited,” Kehoe admitted.

Shaggy’s dominant 1100m victory saw him overpower Golden Slipper contenders Pallaton and United States, taking his record to three wins from three starts.

Kehoe’s plans changed after the win, with connections now setting their sights on next month’s Golden Slipper 2025 instead of the Wellington Boot.

“We all dream of winning the Golden Slipper, so we’ll head that way,” Kehoe said. “We’ll go to the Todman (Stakes) in a fortnight and go from there. He’ll tell us.”

Shaggy’s connections are considering a late entry fee for the Golden Slipper, with the colt now at $11 in betting apps in Australia.

The two-year-old, a half-sister to Moonlight Grace, was a fortunate purchase after breeder Angus Lamont approached Kehoe at the sales.

“I deserve a good one. I’ve been doing this since I was thirteen,” Kehoe said.

Adam Hyeronimus, who rode Shaggy after Aaron Bullock couldn’t make the weight, praised the colt’s calm demeanor and competitive spirit.

Shaggy won by 2-1/4 lengths, with Comedy second and Skyhook third. Pallaton, the $2.05 favourite, finished fourth but jockey Zac Lloyd was pleased with his effort. “He’s still learning his craft,” Lloyd said.
