Knight’s Choice will not compete in this Saturday’s All-Star Mile, with his autumn campaign now uncertain following an injury.
Co-trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon confirmed that the five-year-old Melbourne Cup winner has sustained a leg injury and will be sent for a break.
“We are disappointed to advise that Knight’s Choice has, unfortunately, sustained a knock to his fetlock and the subsequent filling indicates that it is best to put him aside for a few weeks to allow the oedema to subside,” Symons Laxon Racing said in a social media statement.
The injury means Knight’s Choice will miss not only the All-Star Mile (1600m) this Saturday but also the Australian Cup (2000m) on March 29 at Flemington.
Both Group 1 races, each offering a $2.5 million purse, were set to be key targets for the horse, who claimed victory in the Melbourne Cup last November at odds of $91.
Symons and Laxon are now hoping to refocus their sights on the Winter Carnival in Queensland, with the $1.2m Group 2 Q22 (2200m) being considered a potential target for the horse.
