Melham handed month-long suspension after Cup Day fall

Jamie Melham’s Melbourne Cup Day triumph has been followed by a major setback, with the star jockey suspended for 30 meetings after causing a fall later in the Flemington program.

Racing Victoria stewards found Melham guilty of careless riding aboard Fancify in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes, the race after her Melbourne Cup victory on Half Yours.

The incident saw Blake Shinn dislodged from She’s Got Pizzazz, suffering a broken leg.

“Rider Jamie Melham pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding… near the 200m she permitted her mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear,” stewards said.

Melham’s suspension runs from November 16 to December 17, with consideration given to her good record and guilty plea.

Her final day of riding will be Saturday’s Group 1 CF Orr Stakes meeting, before returning the week before Christmas.
