It’s been more than 90 years since Peter Pan captured racing hearts through Melbourne Cup week, but his famous silks could return to the spotlight with Miewa in the Victoria Derby.

Peter Pan’s orange and green stripes were iconic during his dual Melbourne Cup and Champions Stakes triumphs in 1932 and 1934.

Breeder Peter Newsom said the colours were “accidentally bought at a charity auction in Melbourne about 15 years ago.”

“One of our hands were still in the air when the hammer went down so we thought we’d better race in them,” he said.

Trained by Nick Ryan, Miewa is a son of Japanese sire Maurice, like 2021 Derby winner Hitotsu, and sits at $11 for Saturday’s race after runner-up finishes in the Super Impose Stakes (1800m) and Caulfield Classic (2000m).

“He has had the perfect Derby prep,” Ryan said.

“Coming into Saturday, Flemington and with a full field it will be a different story.”
