Wilson hoping Ipswich run delivers overdue win for Clubhouse

Trainer Marcus Wilson is hoping a change of luck can finally swing Clubhouse’s way when he lines up at Ipswich on Monday.

The five-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign marked by bad barriers and unsuitable race tempos, but Wilson believes the 1350m contest may offer the right conditions.

Clubhouse, who has placed in his past two runs at Grafton and Murwillumbah, will again be ridden by Andrew Mallyon.

“He’s been a victim of bad barriers,” Wilson said. “You could make a strong case that he should have won two of his last four starts.”

Wilson praised Mallyon’s understanding of the gelding. “He’s not the easiest horse to ride. He can overrace but Andrew has soft hands and gets on well with him.”

Drawn barrier seven after the scratching of Sanctuary Cove, Wilson remains “quietly confident” the tempo and track will finally suit his runner.
