Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have big plans for stayer Muktamil, but know he must take another step forward in Saturday’s Simpson Construction Handicap (2500m) at Moonee Valley.
The five-year-old needs to lift his rating to secure a start in the Group 3 The Archer (2500m) at Flemington on September 13, a race offering the winner direct entry into the Melbourne Cup (3200m).
“Because of his rating, he really needs to be winning on Saturday,” Young said.
Muktamil, rated 84, has drawn the outside gate in a seven-horse field but will carry just 53.5kg with Luke Currie booked to ride.
The gelding has been a model of consistency, racing exclusively at 2000m and beyond across his last eight starts.
“He gets fit on the smell of an oily rag. He works, he races, and he’s running so well,” Young said.
Young believes Muktamil is in peak condition and hopes a touch of luck can keep their Cups dream alive.
