New sectional timing system for Melbourne racing

A new sectional timing system will be introduced onto metropolitan tracks in Victoria in time for the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The Trakus timing system that has been in place at Caulfield, Flemington and The Valley is to be replaced by triplSdata, who together with Champion Data will deliver enhanced sectional timing and tracking at those courses.

Trialling has been undertaken at Sandown in recent weeks with that track to also benefit from the timing solution while Racing Victoria hopes to add the service to tracks that hold standalone metropolitan meetings in country areas.

The information will continue to be provided to customers and stakeholders through Racing.com’s broadcast and digital platforms, along with on-course screens.

It is expected the new mechanism will be activated at Melbourne’s four metropolitan racetracks throughout July and August, subject to any impact on final implementation and testing owing to COVID restrictions in place at the time.

Aaron Morrison, RV’s Chief Commercial and Financial Officer, said tripleSdata and Champion Data had been appointed due to their proven experience as a race timing and tracking supplier, local operational expertise and improved data reliability thanks to their advanced GPS-RTK technology.

“While data on our race meetings will come from a new platform, all the familiar data points around sectional times will be available to stakeholders with scope for us to expand the information on offer into the future,” Morrison said.

“Phase one of the partnership with tripleSdata and Champion Data will see the new timing and tracking system operational at our four Melbourne tracks over the next six weeks in time for the Spring Racing Carnival.

“Looking ahead, we have aspirations to deliver upgraded timing solutions at our key country tracks, particularly those holding standalone metropolitan meetings.

“This will be dependent on the success of our initial deployment with tripleSdata.”
