Claire Patterson enjoyed a career-defining moment at Caulfield on Wednesday when Blaze Away delivered her first metropolitan victory.
The Flemington trainer teamed up with Lachlan King to win the $50,000 The Big Screen Company Handicap (1100m) on The Heath, marking her sixth career win overall.
“I’m shaking, it’s so good,” Patterson said. “I think I went a bit shrill at one point, but it was good.”
Patterson, who gained her trainer’s licence in 2019/20, has gradually built her small six-horse stable and credited part-owner Greg Harris for sparking the opportunity.
“Blaze’s owner, Greg Harris, he came up and said do you want to train some horses and I thought he was having a laugh,” she said. “But I went, ‘ah, OK’ and here we are.”
King made full use of the inside draw to guide Blaze Away ($8.50) along the rail, scoring by a length over I’mateez ($12).
“It’s a great family and I’m really happy to ride a winner for her,” King said.
