Pike juggling tough Northerly call as Winterbottom looms

William Pike is focused on this Saturday’s Winterbottom Stakes with Rey Magnerio, but he admits a bigger decision is dominating his thoughts.

The champion jockey must choose between Watch Me Rock and King Of Light for the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) on December 6.

Pike rode both horses to feature wins at Ascot last weekend, claiming the Railway Stakes on Watch Me Rock before guiding King Of Light to a brilliant Group 2 WA Guineas victory.

“It’s a good problem to have, they’re going to converge in one race, but honestly I don’t know,” Pike told SENTrack.

“I’m going to have to flip a coin or something like that.

“Watch Me Rock probably doesn’t get in that well at the weights, whereas King Of Light does.”

Pike said three-year-olds have a strong record in the race but believes Watch Me Rock still had “another length up his sleeve”.

King Of Light is the $3 Northerly favourite, with Watch Me Rock at $10.

Pike also made a hard call for the Winterbottom Stakes, choosing Rey Magnerio over Oscar’s Fortune, who recently ran second to Joker’s Grin in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes.

“He’s done nothing wrong…but I just wasn’t sure if we’d be able to beat Joker’s Grin,” Pike said.
