In a dramatic result at Sha Tin, Hugh Bowman rode Red Lion to an unexpected win in the Champions Mile, defeating hot favourite Voyage Bubble, ridden by James McDonald.
Voyage Bubble, the $1.40 favourite, was expected to take the win, but Red Lion, at odds of $90, triumphed in a thrilling finish.
“This is no surprise because he ran second in the race last year, but I am a bit lost for words,” Bowman said.
Trainer John Size, who celebrated the win at 70 years old, credited Bowman’s ability to rate Red Lion perfectly throughout the race.
“He showed the determination of a real racehorse,” Size said.
Red Lion’s victory extends his record to eight wins and 11 placings from 38 starts, adding another prestigious win for owner Ronald Arculli, who also owned Melbourne Cup legend Red Cadeaux.
This was Red Lion’s first win since his triumph in the Chinese New Year Trophy in 2024.
Despite a protest from McDonald over interference in the late stages, Red Lion’s victory was upheld. McDonald expressed pride in Voyage Bubble’s effort, despite the loss.
