Regal Zeus triumphs in Golden Mile after fitness battle

Regal Zeus proved his fitness in the most dramatic of ways, clinching his first Stakes victory in the Golden Mile at Bendigo after overcoming multiple challenges.

Trainer John McArdle and Racing Victoria’s vets had concerns leading up to the race. Regal Zeus was close to being scratched after returning an irregular blood picture on Thursday, but it improved by Friday. Just before the race, he caused a stir in the stalls, prompting another inspection, but was cleared to race.

Despite the obstacles, the four-year-old son of Zoustar showed immense grit, securing a short-head victory over Smokin’ Princess ($6) with Arran Bay ($31) in third. Regal Zeus ($7) made it clear that he’s a tough competitor, jumping straight from 1200m to 1600m after missing a run in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap.

Jockey Jamie Mott, who also won aboard Wonder Boy in the Bendigo Guineas, praised Regal Zeus’s resilience.

“To be out on his feet at the 150m and still hang on shows what a tough racehorse he is,” Mott said. “It’s fantastic to ride three winners on Bendigo Mile Day for three Mornington trainers who support me.”
