Wonder Boy breaks through for maiden Stakes win in Bendigo Guineas

Wonder Boy finally secured his second career victory with a dominant win in the Bendigo Guineas, taking home the $200,000 Listed race on Saturday.

The three-year-old, trained by Jerome Hunter, had not won since his debut at Flemington last June, but his success in the 1400m event marked a breakthrough. Hunter, who has always believed in the gelding, was thrilled to see him deliver.

“I’ve had faith in the horse, and I know he’s just going to get bigger and better,” Hunter said. “It’s fantastic to get him to win a Listed race.”

The $3.10 favourite, ridden by Jamie Mott, triumphed by a half-length from Kalkallo, with Rue De Royale ($4.80) finishing third.

Mott, who had a well-executed ride, said, “He really got into gear late and it was a good win.”

Hunter is now targeting the Queensland Guineas in three weeks and, in the long term, hopes to aim for the Golden Eagle as Wonder Boy’s rating rises.
