Rivellino eyes another chance at Group 1 glory in ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes

After an impressive showing in the Golden Slipper, Rivellino, trained by Kris Lees, will look to secure a Group 1 victory in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick.

Rivellino finished fourth in the Slipper, less than 2-1/2 lengths behind winner Marhoona. Lees is optimistic about the colt’s chances stepping up to 1400m this Saturday.

“His runs up until now have been spaced out, and he’s always shown he’s suited to 1400 metres,” said Lees. “From what I’ve seen, a wet track won’t be an issue either.”

Rivellino’s Slipper run was his first defeat in four starts, having won his debut, the Inglis Millennium, and the Skyline Stakes. Lees believes the colt’s run in the Slipper suggests the 1400m distance of the Sires’ should suit him.

“I wouldn’t say he was a good thing beaten, but things didn’t go his way,” Lees explained.

Lees is also pleased with the return of Hong Kong-based Australian jockey Hugh Bowman to ride Rivellino in the Sires’.
