Rothfire back at The Valley chasing Manikato redemption

Trainer Rob Heathcote is hoping September 26 brings better fortune for his durable sprinter Rothfire.

On this date in 2020, Rothfire broke down with a serious injury while leading the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).
Five years on, he returns for another crack at the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

“I shudder to think how good he could have been if he had not shattered his fetlock in that Golden Rose,” Heathcote said.
“It’s been a challenge to get him this far, but the horse’s welfare always takes precedence, no matter the race.”

Rothfire galloped at The Valley on Monday with Blake Shinn standing in for Nash Rawiller. Heathcote said the gelding looked sharp.
“He’s eight years old but he doesn’t know it. The way he looks, the way he works, his attitude, his enthusiasm, it’s all first class.”

Rothfire, runner-up in this race in 2022, faces a strong line-up including Moir winner Baraqiel, Magic Time, Charm Stone, Skybird and Alabama Lass.
