Kelly Schweida will mirror last year’s approach with Miss Joelene as the mare lines up in Saturday’s Magic Millions Subzero (2200m) at the Gold Coast.

The five-year-old was secured for just $20,000 at the 2022 National Yearling Sales and has since earned more than $1.4 million in prizemoney.

A win on Saturday would push her career earnings beyond the $2 million mark.

Miss Joelene was Group 1 placed in the Queensland Oaks and finished a luckless third in last year’s Subzero after winning The Wave (1800m).

Schweida has again used The Wave as her lead-up, this time on a shorter seven-day backup.

“She’s had a really good week,” Schweida said.

“In each prep she gets a bit better and she’s got a pretty good backup record.

“Drawn barrier 11, which is just standard procedure for us. But couldn’t be happier with the way she’s bounced back.”

Schweida believes riding tactics have helped unlock further improvement.

“I just think we’re riding her a bit better where she’s comfortable,” Schweida said.

“Sometimes we used to go a little bit early on her or have her a bit close.

“I think Cejay (Graham) has gelled the right way with her.”

Miss Joelene will carry 60 kilograms after rising 3.5kg from last year.

“She goes up to 60 kilos Saturday which is always a concern against the better horses, but she won with 59 and a half three starts ago, so she can lump the weight,” Schweida said.

“I couldn’t be more pleased. I wouldn’t drop her.”

Miss Joelene is a $6.50 chance, just behind favourite Sly Boots.
