Silence ends first campaign with a bang

Silence ended his first preparation on a high note at Rosehill , recording his second victory thanks to a canny ride from Glyn Schofield.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt claimed the TAB Handicap on Saturday after Schofield bided his time before unleashing Silence ($12) widest in the straight.

“It’s a 10 out of 10 ride from Glyn because he had a awkward gate (nine),” Peter Snowden said.

“He found a lovely spot and he was patient.

“The leaders went pretty quick and probably set it up for something to grab them late and that’s what happened.”

While Schofield had ample room to make his run, jockeys’ premiership leader Brenton Avdulla’ had to wait before launching his claim on Intrinsic ($4.40).

Avdulla finally pushed the Kris Lees-trained filly through a gap but she did not have enough time to reel in the leader, who hung on to score by a head.

Last Starfighter ($31) took third, a long head behind Intrinsic.

Snowden was impressed with Silence’s debut campaign which opened with a first-up win in Newcastle.

“He’s very genuine, he won first-up in Newcastle and then found two soft tracks,” Snowden said.

“Being back on top of the ground was a plus for him as well,.

“To win two out of four in his first prep, he’s done a very good job.

“As a three-year-old he’ll probably come into his own and be a good horse.”
