Silent Surrente has secured a career-defining victory for apprentice jockey Rochelle Milnes, winning the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on Monday for local trainers Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea.
Milnes, aboard the $10 chance, was initially caught wide but kept the six-year-old mare in a steady rhythm. She took control in the straight, shaking off early leader Newfoundland ($6.50), who held on for second, beaten by 1-1/4 lengths. Grand Pierro ($16) finished third, a further length behind.
The 22-year-old, who was named Dux of the Racing SA Apprentice Academy earlier this year, struggled to find the words after her black-type race win.
“I’m absolutely run ragged,” said Milnes. “I’m so proud of this team and can’t thank them enough for their support.”
This was the first Adelaide Cup win for the Clarken & O’Shea team, with Clarken praising his training partner O’Shea for his work with Silent Surrente.
“Hometown Cup means a lot,” said Clarken. “Niki really trains this horse, and he’s just done a wonderful job.”
Clarken also lauded Milnes, calling her a “silky smooth” rider with a bright future.
Meanwhile, other feature race winners Gala Queen and Sir Sway may target Group One races at the Adelaide May carnival.
